Pepsi, Where's My Jet???
Pepsi, Where's My Jet?
This week I decided to watch a new documentary series on Netflix talking about the Pepsi points system and how one guy tries to win a fighter jet from a Pepsi-sponsored challenge. Pepsi put out an ad basically saying if you accumulate 7 million points (that were on the back of Pepsi cans), then you would win a fighter get. The story is interesting to a certain extent but gets boring pretty quickly. It is pretty clear that the makers of this docuseries were trying to really play up the drama of the show and the outcome when there wasn't a ton to work with. They did a sort of flashback style, having younger actors play out scenes from the two main guys' childhood that depicted how they came up with their plan to win the fighter jet. I didn't hate this, but it was kind of weird and overdramatized acting that made the documentary feel very cheesy. Although, I understand why people may find that style engaging and entertaining so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
The most engaging parts were the interviews with Todd Hoffman, a rich adventurer who helps fund John Leonard's plan to buy a lot of Pepsi and Pepsi points. Hoffman has a very laid-back personality that helps the series feel less rigid, often cursing in his interviews. The story itself is also interesting just because of how abnormal and random it feels, but I think they could have cut the story in half and still produced an information-rich and engaging documentary.
